Youth Climate Council Ghana, an amalgamation of climate-focused groups and organizations is leading a campaign against the proposal by parliament to set up a pensions fund from revenues generated from Ghana’s carbon credits.

The group argues that a move of that nature misplaces Ghana’s commmitments to the climate efforts.

“This move misdirects crucial climate finance away from sustainability efforts, undermining Ghana’s commitments under the Paris Agreement” the petition reads

According to the Council, revenues from carbon credits must be used to support climate action eather than personal benefits.

This proposal came up during the vetting of the minister designate for Environment, Science and Technology, Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed, majority leader and MP for Bawku Central.

Following this, Parliament set up a committee to look into the scheme. This suggestion and move has received a kick-back from various sections of the public after coming up.

The council effectively calls on parliament to immediately withdraw the proposal to use revenues from carbon credits as pensions fund; strictly allocate such revenues to climate mitigation and adaptation projects and finally prioritize development and environmental resilience.

The petition is opened to parsons aged between 18 to 35 years.
